El Alto is now one of the most dynamic cities in Bolivia. Standing 4,150 meters above sea level, it is home to over one million residents, most of whom identify as part of the Aymara indigenous group.
In the heart of El Alto is the famous “Feria 16 de Julio”, the second largest street market in South America. Open every Thursday and Sunday, the market resembles a living organism made up of thousands of street vendors who come together to offer their products: second-hand clothes, auto parts, cell phones, DVDs, furniture, amongst others.
These photographic portraits of the passerby were taken in a mobile studio set up within the market. The project challenges conventional approaches in documentary photography while also paying tribute to the history of itinerant photographers. A video installation accompanies the series of photos.
